Background of the study
Indigenous fishing taboos in Eket Local Government are traditional regulatory mechanisms that have long contributed to environmental sustainability. These taboos, which restrict fishing activities during certain seasons or in specific areas, are rooted in cultural beliefs and ecological wisdom (Mbong, 2023). They serve not only to preserve fish populations and aquatic biodiversity but also to maintain the balance between human activity and nature. In recent years, as modern fishing practices and industrialization have intensified, these indigenous taboos have come under scrutiny for their effectiveness in contemporary resource management. Studies have shown that communities adhering to traditional taboos experience improved fish stocks and a healthier aquatic ecosystem (Inyang, 2024). However, challenges such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and policy neglect threaten the continued relevance of these practices. This study critically evaluates the role of indigenous fishing taboos in fostering environmental sustainability, exploring their potential integration into modern fisheries management frameworks (Effiong, 2025).
Statement of the problem
The increasing pressure from modern fishing practices and environmental degradation has compromised the effectiveness of indigenous fishing taboos in Eket. The erosion of these traditional practices poses a threat to aquatic biodiversity and sustainable resource management. This study aims to assess the impact of modern challenges on the efficacy of fishing taboos and to identify strategies to reinforce these practices in the face of environmental and economic pressures (Mbong, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous fishing taboos in sustainability.
To identify the challenges impacting traditional fishing practices.
To recommend strategies for integrating taboos into modern fisheries management.
Research questions
How effective are indigenous fishing taboos in promoting environmental sustainability?
What challenges hinder the effectiveness of these traditional practices?
What measures can reinforce the role of fishing taboos in sustainable fisheries management?
Research Hypotheses
Indigenous fishing taboos significantly contribute to environmental sustainability.
Modern fishing practices undermine the effectiveness of traditional taboos.
Integrative management strategies can reinforce indigenous taboos.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the environmental benefits of indigenous fishing taboos. Its insights will guide fisheries management policies and contribute to sustainable resource use in Eket Local Government (Inyang, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to evaluating indigenous fishing taboos and their role in environmental sustainability in Eket Local Government and does not cover other regions or environmental practices.
